Choosing Your Prosthesis
After a mastectomy, finding the right prosthesis is such a personal journey — and the good news is there are more options than you might expect.
Silicone prostheses are the most popular choice for everyday wear. They mimic the natural weight and movement of a breast beautifully, and many women love how they feel against the skin. They come in a wide range of shapes, sizes, and skin tones, so finding one that feels like you is very achievable.
Do l need to wear a breast form?
It’s a very personal decision, but not one that should only be made for aesthetic or cosmetic reasons. Many mature age women feel it is not necessary to wear a breast form as “No one looks at me now types of attitudes creep in”.
There are also very therapeutic reasons to wear a breast form as they replace the weight of the removed breast.
When fitted with a breast prosthesis that’s matched in size to the remaining breast, the weight equilibrium of the body is kept in balance.
Not wearing breast prosthesis or wearing one that is heavier or lighter can result in Spinal Curvature, Drop Shoulder, and Muscle Contracture with accompanying discomfort-like neck or back pain, and also balance problems.
Some Ladies say to me they only keep their breast form to wear if they are going out and for good. I try to encourage them to wear it all the time, so it becomes just part of their daily routine. Like brushing your teeth or doing your hair.
It’s also worth knowing that through the Medicare, you’re entitled to a $400. rebate every 2 years for a prosthesis. We can guide you through this — don’t be afraid to ask
A Little Note on Feelings
This step can feel like a big one. Some women find getting their prosthesis and new bras genuinely uplifting — a real sign of moving forward and feeling like themselves again. Others find it quietly emotional, a moment that brings everything back. Both are completely valid.
Take a friend along if that helps, or treat yourself to a solo trip and take all the time you need. There is no right way to feel — what matters is finding something that makes you feel comfortable, confident, and at home in your body again.
You’ve been through something enormous. This is one more step on the road back to feeling good in your own skin — and you absolutely deserve to get there. 💛
