Making the most of your $400 Medicare breast prosthesis rebate.
June 30 2026Making the most of your $400 Medicare breast prosthesis rebate.
If you’ve had breast surgery as a result of breast cancer, you may be entitled to a reimbursement of up to $400 through the Australian Government’s External Breast Prostheses Reimbursement Program. It’s a wonderful bit of support that not everyone knows about, and we love helping our ladies make the most of it.
The rebate covers a new or replacement external breast prosthesis, available every two years, with no time limit on when your surgery took place. You pay for your prosthesis upfront, then claim the reimbursement back through Medicare, or through your private health insurer first if you have one, with Medicare covering any gap.
At Just Lovely, we make this process as simple as possible. We’ll spend time with you in a private fitting room finding a breast form that suits your shape and feels right against your body, then provide a paid invoice with the details Medicare needs. We’re always happy to help you fill out the claim form too, it really doesn’t need to be complicated.
This isn’t just about a form, it’s about feeling like yourself again, comfortable and confident in your clothes. We treat every fitting with the care, privacy and patience it deserves.
If you’re due for a new breast form, or simply haven’t looked into the rebate before, call Just Lovely in Colac for a confidential conversation. 0488322346 When you’re ready we will make an appointment for your personalised unhurried fitting. We’re here for you, every step of the way.
Frequently asked questions
Q: How much can I claim back for a breast prosthesis?
A: You can claim up to $400 per prosthesis through the Medicare funded External Breast Prostheses Reimbursement Program, provided you’ve had breast surgery due to breast cancer and meet the eligibility criteria.
Q: How often can I claim the rebate?
A: You can claim once every two years from the date of your last purchase. If your prosthesis needs replacing sooner for a medical reason, an earlier claim may still be possible.
Q: Do I need to pay upfront before claiming?
A: Yes, you pay for your prosthesis at the time of purchase, then submit your claim with your receipt to Medicare. If you have private health insurance, you’ll need to claim through them first.
Q: What if I have private health insurance?
A: You’ll need to claim any eligible refund through your insurer first. Medicare will then pay the difference up to the $400 maximum, so you’re not missing out either way.
