How do I care for my Bra’s?
May 6 2024How to care for your newly fitted bras
So you’ve just had a proper fitting — yay! There’s nothing quite like wearing a bra that actually fits. Now let’s make sure your beautiful new pieces last as long as possible. A well-cared-for bra can stay with you for a good 12–18 months, so it’s worth giving them a little love.
The basics
- Hand wash is best: Cool water and a gentle soap. Swoosh softly — no wringing.
- Mesh bag if machine washing: Cold, delicate cycle only. Never hot water. Never other heavy items in the wash load. Some company’s warranties DO NOT honour machine washing of their garments.
- Air dry flat: Lay flat or hang by the centre gore. No dryer, ever — heat is a bra’s biggest enemy.
- Rotate daily: Rest each bra for 24 hours between wears to keep the elastics in good shape.
- Store cups up: Stack molded cups inside each other — never fold them in half.
- Skip the fabric softener: It coats the fibres and actually reduces stretch and recovery over time.
Here at Just Lovely, we always say a great fitting is only half the story, how you care for your bras is the other half. If you’re ever unsure about a particular style or fabric, just pop in and ask us. We’re happy to help.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Can I put my bra in the washing machine?
A: You can, but hand washing is always kinder on the fabric and elastics. If you must use the machine, pop it in a mesh laundry bag on a cold, gentle cycle. Some company’s warranties DO NOT honour machine washing. Skip the spin cycle if you can — and never, ever use the dryer. Heat is a bra’s biggest enemy.
Q: How often should I wash my bra?
Every 2–3 wears is a good guide for everyday bras. Sports bras should be washed after every use. Washing too often can wear out elastics faster, so don’t overdo it — but do make sure you’re rotating between a few bras so each one gets a proper rest.
Q: What washing liquid should I use?
A: A gentle lingerie wash or mild soap is ideal. Harsh detergents break down delicate fabrics and elastic fibres over time. Avoid fabric softener — it coats the fibres and reduces stretch and recovery. A small amount of lingerie-specific wash goes a long way.
Q: Why is my bra losing its shape so quickly?
A: A few common culprits: tumble drying, wringing out after washing, or folding molded cups in half. Also check you’re storing them cups-up. If your bra was fitted correctly at Just Lovely and is losing shape fast, it may just need replacing — bras have a lifespan of around 12–18 months with regular wear.
