My Daughter Needs Her First Bra.
June 8 2023Her First Bra — Making It a Happy Moment
So, your daughter has dropped a few hints, or maybe you’ve noticed yourself, it might be time for her first bra. First up, take a breath. This is such a normal, beautiful milestone, and it doesn’t have to be awkward or overwhelming for either of you.
Every girl gets there in her own time. Some are ten, some are thirteen, there’s no “right” age, only the right moment. The signs are usually pretty clear: a little development beginning, maybe some self-consciousness about PE class, or she’s simply asked you about it herself.
The most important thing? Follow her lead. Keep it light, maybe make a little occasion of it, just the two of you. A positive first experience sets the tone for how she’ll feel about her body for years to come.
When it comes to that first bra, fit genuinely matters, even at this stage. A crop top or soft triangle bra is usually perfect to start with, but getting the size right means she’ll actually wear it comfortably rather than pulling at it all day.
Here at Just Lovely in Colac, we do this all the time, and we are so gentle with young girls. There’s zero pressure, no rushing, just a kind, relaxed fitting that leaves them feeling confident and comfortable. Mums often tell us it was easier than they expected! And surprise, surprise we’ve had a number of young ladies say at the counter “That wasn’t that bad.”
If you’re not sure where to start, just pop in or give us a call. We’d love to help make this a really lovely milestone for your girl. 💕
FAQs — First Bras
What age do girls usually need their first bra? Every girl develops differently, so there’s no set age. Most start thinking about their first bra somewhere between 9 and 13. Look for physical changes or growing self-consciousness as your guide. There’s no rush, let her body and her comfort lead the way, not what friends are doing.
What type of bra is best for a first bra? A soft, wire-free crop top or triangle bra is the best place to start. At this stage, comfort is everything, nothing structured or underwired while her body is still developing. The goal is something she’ll actually want to wear each day without fuss.
My daughter is embarrassed about getting fitted, any suggestions? This is really common! Keep it low-key and let her feel in control of the process. A professional fitting means it stays private and relaxed. At Just Lovely our fitters are warm and experienced with shy young girls, so most leave feeling much more at ease than they expected.
Do I need to know her size before coming in for a fitting? No measuring at home needed at all! That’s exactly what a fitting is for. Just come in as you are and we’ll take care of everything gently and accurately. Guessing sizes often leads to poor fit, so letting an experienced fitter handle it is always the better option.
What if my daughter isn’t ready for a proper bra just yet? That’s perfectly okay, there’s absolutely no rush. A soft crop top is a wonderful, gentle first step that still provides comfort and light support. We’ll always work with where she’s at. When she’s ready to move into something more structured, we’ll be here for that too.
